Amritsar, home to Sikhism’s holiest site, the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), is a common extension for Vaishno Devi pilgrims thanks to its good rail and road connectivity from Jammu. The temple complex — with its gold-plated sanctum set in the middle of the sacred Amrit Sarovar tank — runs a langar (community kitchen) that feeds tens of thousands of visitors daily, regardless of faith, and is worth experiencing even for a short visit. Nearby, Jallianwala Bagh memorial marks the site of the 1919 massacre and is a significant stop for anyone interested in India’s independence history.

A short drive from the city, the Wagah Border retreat ceremony — a high-energy, choreographed flag-lowering performed each evening by Indian and Pakistani border forces — draws large crowds and is one of the more distinctive experiences on offer in the region.

Getting There

Amritsar is roughly 200 km from Katra (via Jammu), about four and a half to five hours by road. It’s also well connected by train from Jammu Tawi, which some travellers prefer over the road journey.

Best Time to Visit

October through March brings the most comfortable temperatures for walking around the temple complex and standing through the Wagah Border ceremony, which runs outdoors regardless of season. Summers can be very hot, particularly in the afternoon.

• Head coverings are required inside the Golden Temple complex — scarves are available at the entrance if needed.
• The Wagah Border ceremony involves security screening and a fair amount of standing/walking — arrive with time to spare.
• Langar at the Golden Temple is open to all visitors, and joining it is a genuinely worthwhile experience.
