About Mansar Lake
Mansar Lake is a freshwater lake ringed by forested hills roughly 65 km from Jammu city, considered sacred by many visitors who associate it with the serpent deity Sheshnag from the Mahabharata — local tradition holds that newly married couples take a ceremonial round of the lake for good fortune. A small temple sits on its bank, and the lake itself is a popular boating spot, with pedal boats generally available near the entrance.
The setting is quieter and greener than most of the region’s better-known stops, making it a good half-day addition for travellers who want a slower, scenic break rather than another temple or fort.
Getting There
Mansar Lake is around 85 km from Katra, about two hours by road via Jammu. It’s most efficiently combined with a Jammu sightseeing stop on the same day, since the route passes back near the city.
Best Time to Visit
October through March offers the most pleasant weather for a lakeside walk and boating. Summer visits are possible but the midday heat can make the open lakeside areas less comfortable.
Good to Know
- Boating operating hours can vary seasonally — worth confirming on arrival rather than assuming year-round availability.
- The area around the lake has a handful of small eateries and snack stalls, but options are limited compared to Jammu city.
- A nearby amusement park (Mansar) is sometimes combined into the same visit by families.
