About Shiv Khori

Shiv Khori is a natural limestone cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, tucked into the base of the Trikuta range near the village of Ransoo in Reasi district. Inside the cave, pilgrims walk roughly 200 metres along a naturally formed passage to reach a self-manifested (swayambhu) Shivling, believed by devotees to be eternally growing. The cave’s ceiling is hung with stalactite formations that locals associate with various mythological figures, giving the walk in a temple-like, almost otherworldly feel long before you reach the sanctum.

Local legend ties Shiv Khori to the same mythology as Vaishno Devi — it’s said Bhairon Nath pursued the goddess through a passage that surfaces here, which is part of why the shrine draws so many yatris as a natural add-on to their Katra trip.

Getting There

Shiv Khori sits about 85 km from Katra, roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive on hill roads that wind through Reasi town. Most visitors do it as a day trip: leave Katra in the morning, spend a few hours at the shrine, and be back by evening. A short walk of about 1.5 km from the base parking area to the cave mouth is required — comfortable shoes are worth packing.

Best Time to Visit

Shiv Khori is open through the year, but the cooler months from October to March make the approach walk and the queue outside far more comfortable, since the cave interior stays naturally cool regardless of season. Summer visits are still possible but the midday heat on the approach road can be intense.

Good to Know

  • The cave passage narrows in places; it isn’t ideal for visitors with claustrophobia or significant mobility limitations.
  • A langar (community kitchen) typically operates near the base, run by the shrine trust.
  • Photography inside the cave sanctum is usually restricted — check current shrine board rules on arrival.
