Helicopter Booking
How do I book a helicopter ticket for Vaishno Devi?
Helicopter tickets are released by the Shrine Board in batches and sell out quickly, especially in peak season. Tell us your travel dates when you build your itinerary and select "Helicopter" — we handle the booking window on your behalf.
How much does the Vaishno Devi helicopter cost?
Helicopter fares differ for adults and children and can change with the season — the wizard shows current per-person pricing live as you build your plan.
Can I book helicopter tickets on the day of travel?
Same-day tickets are sometimes available at the counter but are not guaranteed, especially in peak season. Booking in advance through us is strongly recommended.
What happens if the helicopter is cancelled due to weather?
Helicopter services pause in poor weather for safety. If your slot is cancelled, you are rebooked on the next available slot or offered a full refund for that portion of your booking.
Is there a weight limit for helicopter passengers?
Yes, Shrine Board helicopter services apply passenger weight limits for safety. We share the current limit and any related guidance when we confirm your helicopter booking.
How early should I arrive for my helicopter slot?
Arriving at least 60–90 minutes before your scheduled slot is recommended to allow time for security checks and boarding formalities at the helipad.
Yatra Slip / RFID
What is a Yatra Slip and why do I need one?
The Yatra Slip is a free registration card (now issued as an RFID card) required for every pilgrim before starting the trek. It is used for safety tracking along the route and for darshan queue entry at Bhavan.
Where do I get my Yatra Slip in Katra?
Physical RFID cards are issued at Yatra Registration Counters (YRCs) open 24/7 at Katra Railway Station, Katra Bus Stand, Niharika Complex, Jammu Airport, and Vaishnavi Dham (Jammu). If you registered online, you exchange your printout for the physical card at any of these counters — the online slip alone does not get you past the first checkpoint. We guide you through this on arrival.
Is the Yatra Slip free?
Yes, registration for the Yatra Slip / RFID card is completely free of charge.
Can I get a Yatra Slip online before arriving?
Yes — register on the official SMVDSB portal using your mobile number and Aadhaar card, select "Yatra Parchi", add every traveller's details, and download the booking slip. This still needs to be exchanged for a physical RFID card at a registration counter once you arrive. If you skip this step, you can also register on the spot at the Katra Bus Stand or Railway Station counters — it only takes a few minutes.
What is the RFID card used for during the yatra?
The RFID card is checked at Banganga — the first checkpoint on the trek — and scanned at checkpoints along the route to track pilgrim movement for safety purposes, and is also used to manage entry into the darshan queue at Bhavan. You cannot start the trek without it.
Weather & Best Season
What is the best time of year to visit Vaishno Devi?
March through October offers the most comfortable trekking weather. The Navratri months (around April and October) are considered especially auspicious but also bring the largest crowds.
Is Vaishno Devi open in winter?
Yes, the shrine stays open year-round. December to February is colder with occasional snow near Bhavan, which some pilgrims specifically seek out, though it calls for warmer clothing.
What is the weather like at Bhavan compared to Katra?
Bhavan sits at a higher altitude than Katra and is noticeably cooler, especially in the early morning and evening — worth packing a light jacket even in warmer months.
Should I avoid the monsoon season?
The monsoon (roughly July to August) brings a higher chance of landslides and slippery trekking paths. It is not impossible to visit then, but the yatra is generally more comfortable outside this window.
How crowded is Vaishno Devi during Navratri?
Navratri is one of the busiest periods of the year, with significantly longer darshan queues. If you would prefer a quieter trip, consider travelling just before or after the Navratri dates.
What should I pack for the trek?
Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes, a light jacket or shawl (even in summer, evenings are cool), a reusable water bottle, and any personal medication are the essentials most pilgrims are glad they packed.
Senior Citizens & Health
Is the Vaishno Devi trek safe for senior citizens?
Yes — the trek is manageable for most senior citizens at a comfortable pace, and battery cars, palkis, ponies, and helicopter options mean very little of the route needs to be walked if preferred.
What transport options exist for elderly or unwell pilgrims?
Battery cars cover a good stretch of the route, palkis (a seated carrier borne by porters) and ponies are available for hire along the trek, and helicopter service reduces the journey to a short walk from Sanjichhat.
Are oxygen facilities available along the route?
Yes, medical aid posts with basic first-aid and oxygen support are stationed at intervals along the trekking route, particularly useful at higher altitudes near Bhavan.
Is there a battery car option for the full 13 km?
Battery cars typically operate on specific stretches of the route rather than the full distance — we will share the current operating sections when we confirm your plan.
What health precautions should I take before the trek?
If you have a pre-existing heart, lung, or mobility condition, it is worth checking with your doctor before the trip. Carrying personal medication, staying hydrated, and pacing yourself on the climb all help.
Are wheelchairs available at Bhavan?
Limited wheelchair assistance is available in parts of the complex — let us know in advance if this is needed so we can plan your visit accordingly.
Pony / Palki / Pithoo / Battery Car / Ropeway
What is the difference between pony, palki, pithoo, and battery car?
A pony is a horse you ride for the climb; a palki is a seated carrier borne by 4–6 porters, suited to those who would rather not ride or walk; a pithoo is a porter who carries your luggage or a small child; a battery car is a shared electric vehicle covering the paved stretch between Ardhkuwari and Bhawan.
How do I book a pony, palki, or pithoo, and how much do they cost?
These are booked in person, on the day, at the official prepaid counters at Banganga (the trek's start point) or Ardhkuwari — not something we pre-book for you. Rates are fixed by the Shrine Board/municipal committee and displayed at the counter, so you always pay the official price, not a negotiated one. Let us know if you'd like our team to help you arrange one on the day.
Are pony and palki rates fixed?
Yes — pony, palki, and pithoo rates are government-fixed (they vary by weight/distance) and posted at the prepaid counters. You pay the counter, get assigned a registered provider with a valid ID card, and the fare is the same for everyone.
How do I book the battery car (Ardhkuwari to Bhawan), and how much does it cost?
Battery car tickets open online 60 days in advance on the official Shrine Board site, prioritised for senior citizens and pilgrims with medical conditions. Any remaining slots can be bought on the day at the Battery Car shed counters at Ardhkuwari or Manokamna Bhawan from 7:00 AM. Fares are fixed by the Shrine Board — tell us if you'd like help booking this in advance.
What is the ropeway at Bhairon Temple and how do I book it?
After darshan at Bhawan, a short but very steep 1.5 km climb leads to Bhairon Temple — the ropeway covers this in about 3 minutes. It's usually bought as a cash token directly at the counter near Bhawan (open from 6:00 AM), though it can also be booked online 60 days ahead. Fares are fixed by the operator — let us know if you'd like our help booking it.
Can I switch between walking, pony/palki, and battery car mid-route?
Yes, most pilgrims mix walking with a pony, palki, pithoo, or battery car depending on how they are feeling at each stage — you are not locked into one option for the whole trek.
Hotels & Food
What kind of hotels are available in Katra?
Katra has options across every budget, from simple budget lodges to deluxe and premium hotels — our wizard lets you pick a category and shows the per-night rate as you build your plan.
Is food included in yatra packages?
Meals are costed as a line item in your itinerary based on your traveller count and trip length, so you can see exactly what is included before booking.
Are vegetarian and Jain food options available?
Yes — Katra's food culture is almost entirely vegetarian given the pilgrimage setting, and Jain (no onion/garlic) options are widely available at most hotels and restaurants on request.
Do hotels in Katra offer early check-in for pilgrims arriving at night?
Many hotels accommodate early check-in or late check-out for pilgrims on overnight travel, though it is best to confirm this with your specific hotel in advance — we handle this coordination for you.
Is bottled water and food available along the trek route?
Yes, the route is well served with stalls and langars (community kitchens) offering water, snacks, and simple meals at regular intervals.
How far are hotels from the base camp / Tarakote Marg?
Most hotels are within easy walking distance of the base camp area, typically a few minutes on foot — exact distance depends on the specific hotel and category booked.
Mobile Network
Will my phone work throughout the yatra?
Coverage is generally reliable in Katra and along most of the trekking route, though signal can weaken in patches, particularly closer to Bhavan and in the cave sanctum itself.
Which network has the best coverage in Katra and along the trek?
Coverage quality varies by operator and can change over time — carrying a backup SIM from a different network is a reasonable precaution if staying connected is important to you.
Is there Wi-Fi available at Bhavan or Katra hotels?
Most Katra hotels offer Wi-Fi. At Bhavan itself, connectivity is limited to mobile network coverage rather than public Wi-Fi.
Can I charge my phone during the trek?
Charging points are available at some stalls and rest points along the route, but it is safest to start the trek with a full battery and carry a power bank if you rely on your phone.
Is there network coverage inside the Bhavan cave/sanctum?
Signal is typically very weak or unavailable inside the sanctum itself — most pilgrims find this a natural moment to be phone-free.
Payments & Booking
Do I need to pay in advance to book with you?
No advance is required to get your custom itinerary and price — that part is always free. Advance payment is only discussed once you are happy with the plan and need to lock in hotel or helicopter inventory.
What payment methods do you accept?
We share available payment options — bank transfer, UPI, or a secure payment link — when confirming your booking. No card details are ever collected over chat.
Is my booking refundable if my plans change?
Refund terms depend on how close to travel you cancel and whether hotel/helicopter inventory has already been locked in on your behalf — see our Refund Policy for the full terms.
How do I confirm helicopter or hotel availability before paying?
Our travel expert confirms live availability with the hotel and (where applicable) helicopter operator before you are asked to pay anything.
Will I get a confirmation after booking?
Yes — you will receive a written confirmation with your itinerary, hotel details, and any booking references over WhatsApp.
Can I modify my itinerary after booking?
In most cases yes, subject to availability — reach out to your travel expert on WhatsApp as early as possible if your plans change.
